Welcome to our Year 6 Page

Although Year 6 is a challenging year with the Standard Assessments Tests (SATs) in May and all of the preparation in readiness for secondary school, it is also a year packed full of interest. At Friars, we believe in the importance of a broad and balanced curriculum for children.

During the year, the children further enhance their historical skills with learning about the Victorian and Mayan eras. These areas of study are often explored in creative ways too. For example, the children produce William Morris inspired Victorian artwork and Mayan masks. As geographers, the children explore the British Empire as well as looking at climates and building on their mapwork.

The children are given opportunities to show their commitment to the school by representing Friars through sport, music and other mediums. Individual abilities are recognised through earning the chance to hold a position of trust within the school.

Towards the end of the year, the children are able to participate in our residential trip to the Isle of Wight. The children will enjoy activities that are not normally accessible during the school day, encouraging teamwork, co-operation and friendship and developing skills such as resilience, perseverance and self-confidence.

The year culminates with the children’s own summer fete (they organise and run this to raise money to purchase their leaver’s hoodies) and the annual leaver’s assembly in which all children are able to participate to celebrate their time at Friars and to look forward to moving on to their new schools.
